How Many Appointments Will I Need?

Dr. Gentile will want to see you for your first post-operative visit a day or two after surgery to remove any drains and monitor your recovery, followed by another visit approximately one week after facelift surgery to remove the sutures. You will then need to follow up one month after surgery and then every quarter for the first year after your surgery.

How Long Until I See Results?

Even though you might see immediate changes right after surgery, the bruising and swelling during the first few weeks will obscure the impact. While recovery should only take about three to four weeks, most patients will require about six months to a year to see their optimal facelift results.

What Will the Scarring Look Like?

The type of facelift you receive will affect the scarring. The scars are along the hairline or scalp for a deep-plane facelift, whereas for a mini-facelift, they are in front of the ear lobe or behind it. He will explain the pros and cons of each type of facelift offered and will recommend the best match for your aesthetic goals.

Once you and Dr. Gentile decide on the way forward, one of Dr. Gentile’s staff members can review your treatment plan’s cost and payment options to suit your budget.

You may be asked to prepare your body for surgery in the weeks or months leading up to a facelift procedure. This often includes, but is not limited to:

A physical exam
Lab work
Discontinue taking specific medications
Discontinue the use of tobacco products (generally smoking)

Facelift surgery is often performed outpatient, meaning patients can return home after the procedure. In advance, you must arrange for someone to pick you up and care for you after Dr. Gentile has completed the procedure. This trusted adult will administer your pain medication, accompany you on bathroom visits, and ensure you receive proper fluids following the facelift. Before you receive your facelift, you will learn how to care for your face and surgical sites following the procedure.

The night before your surgery, you will take medications prescribed by Dr. Gentile and set out the recommended clothes to wear the following day. Food will not be permitted past a certain time due to the anesthesia and/or sedation, which will depend on the time your surgery is scheduled.

What to Expect
on the Day of
Facelift Surgery

On the day of your facelift at Gentile Plastic Surgery, Dr. Gentile and his staff will receive you at the practice and get you settled in the surgical suite. A member of the staff will review your plan and ensure you are fully comfortable to proceed with it. Then, a board-certified
Anesthesiologist will administer the medicine appropriate for your specific procedure. This maximizes patient comfort and allows Dr. Gentile to work uninterrupted.

When asleep, Dr. Gentile will sanitize your face and begin incisions. Some doctors mark the face before facial procedures, while others create marks as the patients rest. The incisions will be made in specific areas depending on the type of facelift you have chosen. These incisions are designed to hide future scars. The most popular surgical site is located behind the hairline. The incision continues on either side of the face around the ears and to the base of the neck. Dr. Gentile may redistribute fat, tighten or lift muscles of the face, or create more incisions if necessary. If sagging skin affects the neckline, a small surgical cut is hidden under the chin, and the issue is corrected.

After all necessary changes are made to the face, the skin is then repositioned, and the excess is trimmed away. Sutures hold the skin in place until they are removed or dissolve on their own. Special surgical adhesives may also be used to close the incision.

Recovery

Most patients can return to their daily activities ten to fourteen days after undergoing facelift surgery. However, strenuous jobs and vigorous activities such as aerobics, alcohol consumption, saunas, and steam baths must be postponed for several months or until Dr. Gentile advises otherwise. You will visit the doctor shortly after your surgery so he can assess your progress and recovery.
